Symptoms, in plain words

Peripheral neuropathy symptoms: numbness, tingling, burning and weakness

Quick answer

Peripheral neuropathy symptoms usually start as numbness, prickling or tingling in the feet or hands, and can include burning pain, touch sensitivity, weakness and poor balance. Mayo Clinic says to seek medical care right away for tingling, weakness or pain in the hands or feet. Sudden one-sided numbness or weakness is a 911 call.

The signs

What are the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy symptoms are changes in feeling or strength in the hands, feet, arms or legs, and they often arrive slowly. Mayo Clinic lists gradual numbness, prickling or tingling that can spread up the legs and arms, sharp, throbbing or burning pain, sensitivity to touch, weakness and poor coordination (Mayo Clinic, Peripheral neuropathy).

NINDS counts more than 100 types, so descriptions vary (NINDS, Peripheral neuropathy). A feeling is not a diagnosis; only an exam and tests can say what is behind it.

Urgent or soon

Which neuropathy symptoms need urgent care?

Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, needs a 911 call. CDC lists it as a stroke sign, along with sudden confusion, trouble speaking, seeing or walking, and a sudden severe headache (CDC, Stroke signs and symptoms).

Loss of bladder or bowel control also belongs in emergency care.

  1. Sudden numbness or weakness on one side, trouble speaking, seeing or walkingCall 911. CDC lists these as stroke signs.
  2. Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, belly pain, fatigueCan be signs of liver trouble, which LiverTox links to turmeric. Stop and get medical care the same day.
  3. Unusual bruising, nosebleeds or blood in urine or stoolPossible bleeding, especially on a blood thinner (MSK on turmeric and CoQ10). Stop and call your clinician or pharmacist.
  4. Shaky, sweaty, confused, very hungryPossible low blood sugar if you take diabetes medicine (MSK on alpha lipoic acid): treat it as your care team told you and call them.
  5. Rash, hives or swellingPossible allergy. Stop and get medical help; swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing is an emergency.
  6. Diarrhea, nausea, stomach crampsCommon supplement effects (NIH on magnesium and carnitine). Stop and ask a clinician if they persist.

Signs from (CDC, Stroke signs and symptoms) (LiverTox, Turmeric) (MSK, Alpha-lipoic acid) (NIH ODS, Magnesium). This list is not complete. A supplement is never a reason to wait.

Behind the feeling

What causes numbness, tingling and burning in the feet?

Several problems can, and a clinician sorts them out. Diabetes is the leading cause of peripheral neuropathy in the U.S. (NINDS, Peripheral neuropathy).

NIH says a B12 shortage can cause numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, even without anemia (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). Mayo Clinic adds alcohol use disorder, some medicines and nerve pressure. Ask about a B12 level, a blood sugar test and a nerve exam. See peripheral nerve basics and foot tingling causes.

The capsule

Does Flow Nerves treat peripheral neuropathy symptoms?

No. Flow Nerves is a once-daily dietary supplement capsule, 30 to a bottle, not a drug or a neuropathy medicine, and we found no trial that tested it.

The bottle front prints “Nerve Support*”, and the sales copy is described to us as aimed at “the nerve endings in your hands, feet, and legs”. Those are the seller's words. It names six ingredients in a proprietary blend, prints no amount, and we were not given a Supplement Facts panel.

The best-studied is alpha lipoic acid: in a 2023 meta-analysis of 10 trials with 1,242 people who had diagnosed diabetic neuropathy, oral doses of about 600 to 1,800 mg a day improved a symptom score but not pain or nerve conduction (Hsieh 2023, oral alpha-lipoic acid meta). With no printed amount, nobody can compare.

FAQ

Flow Nerves questions people ask

Are tingling feet always neuropathy?

No. Tingling can come from nerve pressure, a B12 shortage, diabetes, alcohol or medicines, and sometimes no cause is found. Mayo Clinic says to seek care so a clinician can look for the reason.

Can neuropathy affect balance?

Mayo Clinic lists poor coordination, falls and muscle weakness among the symptoms. Sudden balance change, or with face droop or trouble speaking, means 911. If it creeps in, tell a clinician soon.

Does Flow Nerves list neuropathy symptoms it helps?

No. The bottle front prints a quoted line, 'Nerve Support*', and we hold no claim that it treats neuropathy. No trial tested the capsule.
